Old Goa awakened today to an atmosphere thick with spirituality and reverence as thousands of devotees converged to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis Xavier.
This year’s celebration is especially significant, as it coincides with the XVIII Exposition of the saint’s sacred relics, transforming the event into a remarkable spiritual spectacle.

For centuries, St. Francis Xavier has inspired millions, his arrival in Goa on May 6, 1542, a historical moment etched into the region’s religious and cultural identity. Fast forward to 2024, the day has blossomed into one of grand anticipation, devout prayer, and fervent faith as pilgrims from across the globe gather to honor the beloved saint.
The day began long before the sun rose, with the first Mass at 3:45 AM. By this time, the pandal outside the Basilica of Bom Jesus was already brimming with devotees. Subsequent Masses at 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM saw even larger crowds, their voices united in prayerful hymns, creating a solemn yet jubilant ambiance.
The 6:00 AM Mass, concelebrated by 11 priests, carried a poignant message. The main celebrant shared a touching insight into St. Francis Xavier’s journey to Goa, which began as an accidental mission after another priest fell ill. Yet, this “accident” became a divine appointment, cementing the saint’s legacy in the hearts of the faithful.
From as early as 5:00 AM, devotees formed long queues leading to the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier. The line stretched halfway from Gandhi Circle, a testament to the saint’s enduring influence. Despite the sheer number of pilgrims, the queue moved swiftly, allowing everyone a chance to venerate the relics.
The act of kissing the sacred casket was described by many as a surreal and once-in-a-lifetime experience, imbued with deep spiritual significance. For some, the 40-minute journey from the main road to Se Cathedral felt like a divine pilgrimage, each step a prayer, each moment a connection to the saint’s legacy.
At 7:25 AM, as the 7:00 AM Mass was underway and queues of pilgrims continued their prayerful procession, light showers graced Old Goa. Many interpreted the rain as a celestial blessing, a gentle reminder of grace and providence. Thankfully, the pathways to Se Cathedral were well-covered, sparing the devotees from being drenched and ensuring their spiritual journey remained unhindered.
