PORVORIM: Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, along with Deputy Collector Pundalik Corjuvekar, Traffic Inspector Roy Perreira, RTO officials and the residents of Defence Colony inspected the O’Coqueiro Junction to look into the possibility of removing the barricades put to prevent the movement of vehicles from B B Borkar road to Saligao-Calangute.
Residents of Defence Colony and surrounding areas had demanded the removal of the barricades and submitted a representation to this effect to the Collector, Directorate of Transport and the Traffic Police.
Speaking to Herald, Brig (retd) N H Braganza said that due to the barricades at O’Coqueiro circle the residents of Defence Colony are compelled to drive to the Church near Federal Bank and take left turn to proceed to Saligao and Calangute. He added that it becomes difficult for pedestrians to cross the road near O’Coqueiro circle. He pointed out that an elderly person was knocked down at the circle while crossing the road.
They have written to the departments concerned, including the local MLA, in this regard and have requested them to consider their demand sympathetically failing which they will have to launch an agitation, Braganza said.
Corjuvekar stated that since there is a notification barring movement of the vehicles from B B Borkar road to Saligao no decision on removal of the barricades can be taken at this point of time. He said he would discuss this matter with the collector and the authorities concerned.
Khaunte stated that the residents of Defence Colony had been demanding the removal of the barricades and this being a genuine demand he had requested the collector and the Traffic Police to look into the matter. He has also requested the government to install traffic signals at Sai Circle and Alto Porvorim Bazaar to ensure better traffic management, Khaunte said.
