PANJIM: The affected residents of Bhoma and Corlim on Saturday reiterated their opposition to expansion of national highway and alleged that the State government is out to destroy the village areas to benefit the real estate lobby.
Interacting with mediapersons at Azad Maidan, here, the villagers urged the government to consider constructing a bypass road from the outskirts of the village without ruining the village residential areas and doing proper alignment of the road.

“Plots have been developed illegally at one of the proposed sites of highway expansion. They want to construct highways and develop properties and help the builder lobby. The expansion of highway is a threat to our villages. We want people to support us in protecting the heritage temples, shops and Portuguese-era houses,” local resident Sanjay Naik said.
He alleged that some areas through which the highway is passing were not shown in the presentation held by the PWD for the villagers.
Denouncing the claim of PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral that only a few houses will be affected, Naik said that the government wants to wipe out the entire village of Bhoma.
“Future of our children will be destroyed if the government goes ahead with the project,” Naik added.
