PONDA: Around ten women selling dry fish in Ponda market on Wednesday raised serious concern over their safety after dry coconuts fell, breaking the cement sheet and landing close to where they sat. Fortunately no one was injured.
The women have threatened to stop paying Sopo if the shed was not repaired immediately.
They claimed that the place was not safe for them as well as customers, as two coconut trees in the vicinity, with frequently falling dry coconuts in the area.
According to them two dry coconut fell on roof and then on the platform where they sit, causing almost one and half meter crack to the cement roof on Wednesday.
Fortunately no one was injured. The worried vendors have demanded the shifting to the original place of their business, located in the fish market shed on first floor.
According to the vendors, PMC was ignoring their safety and have demanded unbreakable GI Sheets to prevent injury.
They have threatened to protest by not paying regular sopo taxes, if their demands were not met.
The two coconut trees are located in a private property but lean on PMC market shed where the women selling dry fish.
PMC CO Navnath Naik, who is also Deputy Collector of Ponda, said he had taken note of the safety concern and that will take suitable action.
