MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has criticized the Goa government for failing to help sugarcane farmers. He alleged that the support price and subsidies announced for the farmers had not been given for six months.
He also accused the management of Sanjeevani Sugar Cooperative of trying to shut down the Sanjeevani sugar plant in order to grab the land. The management was allegedly provoking the farmers to reduce sugarcane production until they could eventually close the plant.
“One of the directors at Sanjeevani has told some farmers to reduce and stop growing sugarcane, and that he would compensate them later,” said Lourenco. He demanded a vigilance enquiry in the matter.
The MLA also highlighted illegalities in the marketing and selling of Molesiss. He said, “There is concrete proof of the illegalities captured on CCTV cameras on weigh bridges. A vigilance enquiry has to be done and action is required to be taken against the people involved.”
Lorenco will meet the Registrar of Cooperative Societies on Monday and hand over the memorandum of his demands.
