PANJIM: The State Legislative Assembly on Wednesday discussed the controversial death of US national Caitan Vholte, who died in Korgao suffocating in the sludge on Tuesday evening.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar confirming the incident on the Floor of the House said that as per police information, Vholte died due to suffocation in the sludge, when he was running trying to save himself from the public. “I am told he was chased by people as well as the police. He started running in the paddy field and he died out of suffocation in the sludge,” said Parsekar, who also assured to find out more details.
The issue was raised by the Leader of the Opposition Pratapsingh Rane, as soon as the Assembly session began on Wednesday morning. He raised apprehensions that tourists would stop visiting the state if foreigners died like this. “Who will come to Goa if tourists die like this?” he questioned. “There is news that has come that a foreign tourist has been killed by locals and police were also present. This is something very serious and needs to be looked into,” Rane said adding, “I don’t understand where the State tourism is heading.”
