Goan musicians in the Hindi film industry have become legendary. Joseph D’Costa, often referred to as Joe, is not yet a name as famous as some others, but he has already established himself in the Bollywood film industry where he has arranged and programmed music along with Amit Mishra for Hindi movies like Atithi Tum Kub Jaoge, Tara Sitara, Machali Jal Ki Rani Hai and Welcome to Karachi, besides TV serial Lapataganj and another upcoming movie Pranam Walekum.
The Curchorem born Joe was raised in a working class family and studied up to Class VII in Guardian Angel High School, Curchorem and then proceeded to join Pilar seminary where he began his lifelong love affair with music and took formal music lessons under the guidance of well-known musician Fr Peter Cardozo.
After completing his guitar grades through Royal School of Music, London he played with several leading bands in Goa as lead/rhythm guitarist and met well known singer Seby Dias who invited him to join his group band “Seby and the Wings” which was performing in a five star hotel at Delhi.
Once in Delhi, the sky was the limit for Joe and he started rendering jingles for advertising agencies and gradually got the opportunity with Archives Music Production to arrange instrumental music entitled “Listen to My Heart” which was released in 1995 in four volumes two in English and two in Hindi.
Joe’s dedication and super performances opened to him the door of Magnasound, the biggest music company of India where he got a good response for creating re-mixes. He also arranged Punjabi pop music with the assistance of top music director from Punjab Surender Bachchan, and got an opportunity to tour abroad to perform live.
In 2006 his first Konkani album “Goemkar Zai” blending pop, rock, Latin, salsa and theatrical sounds was released by Rock and Raaga at the hands of Goan percussionist Bondo. His second album “Go Go Goa” was released in 2012 and through both the albums he brought refreshing changes in the music scenario in Goa where he has not only composed, arranged and directed all the tracks but also played guitar, synthesizer and sang a songs and lent a voice for some of the tracks.
In a musical career that has spanned over three decades, Joe has earned his reputation as a self-driven man encompassing various facts that has helped him emerge as one of Goa’s leading musician today.
Giving live performances, recently he staged Konkani musical concert “Pormoll Konkani Songitacho” in Panjim and Margao with well known singers Nephie Rod, Sonia Shirsat, Seby and Elvis Goes.
While composing music he strives for accuracy and fairness. He sees that it is corrected if something does not sound right.
